Listen to Obituary

David Glenn Starkey, 84, of Brady Lake, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2026 at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, following a brief battle against cancer. David was born in Akron on November 7, 1941 to the late Hoy and Lena Starkey, and worked as an electrician with IBEW Local 306 throughout his life as a sign man, and enjoyed his work for Ellet Neon Signs. Early in his life, David served his country during the Vietnam War in the United States Army, working as a truck driver while stationed in Alaska.

David was a dedicated and active member of Lake Brady United Methodist Church (UMC) for greater than 57 years. David married in this church, established his membership, and attended his children’s baptisms at Lake Brady UMC; to describe him as an avid, committed churchgoer cannot fully underscore the depth of his love and loyalty for God, Jesus, and the faithfulness of his church. David showed his passion through acts of service and often served as a handyman and jack-of-all-trades for anything they may have needed. David’s fervor in this life was illustrated through his Bible studies, as well as loving and providing for his family. He enjoyed making his annual trip to southern Ohio for hunting and deer camp, joining with his brothers, sons, and nephews to enjoy quality time, united with matching hats and brotherly love. David also loved playing softball; he participated in softball leagues for many years, nurturing a love for the sport in his children and grandchildren. Anyone who knew David, knew his taste for a hot cup of black coffee and his oft-stated phrase, “Mercy.”

David suffered the loss of multiple family members, particularly the passing of his wife. David and Barbara celebrated 45 years of marriage until her departure from this life. Despite these great losses, David remained tremendously devoted to his remaining family members. Always available to provide help or comfort, David was an incredibly kind, benevolent, and humble man. He never missed his grandchildren’s events, and he cherished his time with his great granddaughter; he enthusiastically awaited the birth of his second great granddaughter, smiling from ear to ear at pictures of this newborn life. David will be profoundly missed and never forgotten by those who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

In addition to his late parents, David was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Starkey on September 15, 2014; his daughter, Sherylre Starkey; his son, David Graham Starkey; his brothers, James O. Starkey and Robert Starkey; and his nephews, Joey and Bobby Starkey.

He leaves his grandchildren, Courtney (Carter Kuhn) Burchett, Brady (Alyssa) Starkey, Kyle (Dana) Burchett, Emily (D.J. Kuehn) Starkey, and his two great granddaughters, Kinsley “KK” Chandler and Ella Starkey.

Honoring his wishes, David will be cremated and a memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 2:00 P.M. at Lake Brady United Methodist Church, 1995 Brady Lake Rd., Kent, OH, 44240.
