Edward C. Krimmer

Edward C. Krimmer was born December 31, 1933, to the late Lamont Charles and Virginia Mae (Thomas) Krimmer in Youngstown, Ohio. His parents moved about in Youngstown and Girard, Ohio before eventually ending up in Craig Beach, Lake Milton, Ohio. The family, during this time, grew to include five girls Janice, Vivian, Carol, Anita, and Ramona, and two boys, Eddie and William.

Edward graduated from Newton Falls High School in 1952 and eventually was employed as a truck driver in the nearby Ravenna Arsenal. He had joined the Naval Reserve while in High School and elected to enter active duty in 1955, at which time he was stationed with an Anti-submarine Squadron station in Quonset Point, RI. He studied photography, and eventually earned the rating of Photographer Petty Officer 3rd Class, which subsequently led him to be transferred to a Naval Photographic Squadron in Norfolk, VA. This squadron supported a detachment in Italy. Edward chose to extend his two years of obligated active-duty service to be eligible to spend six months in Naples, Italy.

During his stay in Naples, he spent his weekends sightseeing more of Italy. Late in 1957 he was transferred to Jacksonville, FL, and Honorably Discharged from active duty and resumed life in Ohio. His high school sweetheart, and fiancée, Jane Elizabeth Lucarell, had also relocated back to Youngstown, OH, and was currently enrolled at Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA. Jane and Edward were married on January 18, 1958 in Youngstown, OH, and made their home in Pittsburgh so that Jane could complete her training to become a Registered Nurse.

A former scoutmaster, then living in Pittsburgh, introduced Edward to a medical researcher at the University of Pittsburgh. After a discussion with him and another researcher, Ed was hired as an Animal Caretaker with the Department of Clinical Science at the University of Pittsburgh. The Department had a strong incentive for education and Edward soon made the choice to enter undergraduate school. However, after passing the entrance exam he learned he was deficient in several required high school courses. Edward enrolled in night school and obtained the necessary courses before entering the University of Pittsburgh as a part time student. He ultimately obtained a PhD in Pharmacology. Ed worked for many years in research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. In 1988, he took a position at the Northeast Ohio School of Medicine, which brought Ed and Jane back to Ohio to settle in Kent for the next 35 years.

After several more years of research and teaching in Ohio, Ed retired. While he had always been busy with various hobbies, retirement allowed him to delve deeper into his beekeeping, flying twin-engine planes, running, followed by his passion for biking. He and Jane spent their golden years travelling out West to visit with their boys and grandchildren in Colorado and California and enjoying the National Parks. As a family, we attribute our senses of adventure and love of the outdoors to Dad. His example of ‘trying new things’ led us down many roads we might never have travelled.

Ed is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jane; siblings, Anita (Larry) Beardsley, Ramona Zeck, and Bill Krimmer; son Edward (Chris “Heather”) Krimmer of Fontana, CA; daughter Suzann Altmire of Kent, OH; son Eric (Anne) Krimmer of Carbondale, CO; grandchildren, Jacob Streff, Tricia (Krimmer) Hobbs, Daniel Krimmer, Colin Margo, Cameron Margo, Molly (Altmire) Gilleland, and Jeffrey Altmire; four great-grandchildren, Julian and Jaxson Hobbs, Landyn and Reed Gilleland and countless nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by three sisters, Janice, Vivian, and Carol.

In honoring his wishes, Ed will be cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
