Inger Olsen Salsgiver

After living a full life enjoying many wonderful years with her family, Inger Olsen Salsgiver was welcomed into Heaven by the loving arms of her Savior at the age of 91. She passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home with her family by her side. She was born in Reykjavik, Iceland on November 3, 1934 to the late Sigurgeir Kristjansson and Pernilla Olsen Monsdottir.

Inger spent her early years of life in her homeland of the beautiful country of Iceland. This is and always will be a special place to her and her surviving family. Most of her immediate family still resides there. She was extremely close with her late sister, “Labba” Gowan, often being referred to as twins who were completely in sync with each other. They kept their Icelandic language alive with daily extensive phone chats and lots of “Eg Elska Pig” (I love you’s). She met her late husband while he was in the United States Army stationed in Iceland. They moved to the United States in 1958 to start their family.

She was lovingly referred to as “Amma” by many of her friends and family. If you knew her, you knew that she filled every room she walked into with light, laughter, and endless warmth. She was always the first to dance, quickest to make a joke, and the most generous soul you’d ever meet. She showed us all how to live life with a joyful and happy heart. Her love for God was embodied in how she loved those around her. She was a gracious and grateful woman, eternal optimist, and a fierce protector of her family. She was never far from a cup of coffee and always had a pocketful of sweets and hard candies. Her family referred to her as the “Energizer Bunny” since she was always on the go. She always bounced back from whatever circumstances came her way. Inger will be deeply missed and never forgotten by those who knew and loved her.

Through the years Inger was employed by many different services. She took the most pride in her years at McDonalds. We will always think of her when we see those golden arches. She was also a lifelong caregiver herself, caring for many in different ages and stages who became like family to her. She enjoyed going to casinos, playing cards and bingo, and watching her favorite game shows. She held many fond memories of her active participation as a member of the Amvets and Eagle’s in the cities Mentor and Stow.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Sveinn Birgir Sigurgeirsson and Sigurgeir Orn Sigurgeirsson; and her sister Thuridir “Labba” Gowan.

Her surviving family members include her daughter, Judy Mitchell (TJ); sons, Alexander Salsgiver and Alan (Kristy) Salsgiver, and her children residing in Iceland, Gardar Sigurgeirsson and Fjola Grimsdottir; grandchildren, Alex (Arlene), Jessica (Rick), Bryan (Natalie), Kyla (Matt), Cole (Kaitie), Shelby (Nate), and Connor; 12 great grandchildren; and sisters, Sigrun Sigurgeirsdottir and Kolbrun Anna Sigurgeirsdottir, along with many other beloved Icelandic family members.

In honoring her wishes, Inger will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
