James Jacob Floyd aka “Big Jim” or “Floyd” passed away on May 15, 2026, preceded in death and now reunited with his wife Sandra “Betty” Floyd, son Chancellor Floyd, father, Lester “Sam” Floyd, mother, Mildred Floyd and brother, Roscoe Floyd.
James, a Veteran in the United States Army and decorated Sharpshooter, served from 1964-1970 he returned to his home town after his honorable discharge from the Army; he began working at Ohio Edison as a mechanic while simultaneously working with his father and eventually running his family business with his brother Lee. James retired from Ohio Edison after forty years of service and with Lee, continued their father’s legacy of “Floyd’s Hauling Service” through 2025, he was a lifetime Kentite.
James, a skilled mechanic and a car and motorcycle enthusiant was very well known throughout the Kent/Ravenna area; wherever he went, he never met a stranger; he always loved to stop and chat with people. James will be remembered in many different ways by many people, but all will remember him as a pillar of the community and “the slow driving guy in the white van.”
James leaves his family, son Gaylan (Patty) Floyd, daughter Erica (Walter) Holliday, stepdaughter, Terri Boykin, brother, Forest “Lee” Floyd, sisters, Sharyn Floyd and Virginia “Kande” Floyd along with his grandchildren and great granddaughter and other extended family members as well as a plethora of friends and his grand dogs Luna and Kaiya.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at Bissler Funeral Home & Crematory 628 W. Main St. Kent, OH 44240. Viewing will be 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM, Wednesday, May 27, 2026 with Internment at Standing Rock Cemetery. A Repass will be held 1:30 - 3:30 PM, directly following Internment, at American Legion Post 496 1945 Mogadore Road Kent, OH 44240.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that monetary and/or food donations made in the name of James J. Floyd be directed to the following: Kent Social Services 1066 South Water Street Kent, OH 44240.
