John "Jeff" Norton

Father, husband, brother, and friend to all, John “Jeff” Norton was born on December 29th, 1956 to the late Mary and Fred Norton. Jeff passed away on June 23rd, 2026 in Akron, Ohio at Akron City Hospital, the same hospital where he was born, surrounded by his beloved family and dearest friends. The Norton family shares their gratitude for the staff at Summa Hospital’s Neuro ICU for their unparalleled kindness, professionalism, and humanity as they embraced our family and cared for Jeff in our time of need. 

To know Jeff was to know love. He led a life that radiated joy, selflessness, and gentleness. His humor and generosity were themes that carried throughout the entirety of his life. Jeff grew up in Cuyahoga Falls and later attended the University of Cincinnati where he graduated with a degree in Industrial Design. After college, Jeff kicked off a long and storied career as a toy designer. Spanning over 40 years, Jeff’s career tenure was an ode to his spirit of playfulness and creativity. From play sets to swings to wagons, Jeff’s style was as classic as it was creative.

However, of the many things Jeff created throughout his career, the most cherished by him were the countless friendships that he developed over the years. Jeff will certainly be missed by his long time friends and colleagues, especially those at Little Tikes and (most recently) Step2.

Jeff’s playful yet hard-working nature was evidenced in how he chose to spend his time. He relished getting lost in yard work and house projects, and was quick to help a neighbor, friend, or loved one. Jeff’s family fondly remembers the endless supply of energy and creativity he used every day as he tinkered, fixed, and problem-solved, often resulting in solutions that were as ingenious as they were humorous.

Jeff also leaves behind a wonderful legacy of service – from volunteering at YMCA Camp Fitch (most remembered for his contributions to the construction of “Friend” Circle Amphitheater) to many hours helping those in need. Jeff will forever be remembered for his selflessness and swiftness to action.

Most recently, Jeff could be found pursuing his newest passion: playing pickleball! Jeff was a dedicated student of the game, bringing the same focus, drive, and energy to the court that he brought to all of his life’s interests. Most importantly to Jeff, however, were the beautiful friendships that he fostered among his tight-knit flock that became his pickleball family. Jeff’s family is thankful for these friendships that brought so much joy into Jeff’s life of late.

Above all of his life’s pursuits, however, Jeff’s greatest fulfillment came from the joys of being a father and husband. Jeff is survived by his wife of 33 years, Toni, and two daughters, Bailey and Sadie. To say Jeff was a devoted family man would be a considerable understatement– Jeff was the best father not only to his girls, but also to the many young people who were lucky enough to cross paths with him throughout his life. Jeff is also survived by his brother Dave Norton and sister Kay Hettler and their extended families.

Jeff’s legacy of kindness will certainly live on through all those that he encountered. He shared with the world a profound depth of love, a witty sense of humor, and a robust kindness that was as rare as it was inspiring. Jeff will be missed by many. Carrying forth his legacy of generosity, Jeff’s family requests that any charitable donations be made to YMCA Camp Fitch (12600 Abels Rd. North Springfield, PA, 16430).

A small Celebration of Life will be held among family and friends at a later date.
