Listen to Obituary

Mary L. Messerly, 85, of Stow, passed away on Sunday, June 29, 2025 in the comfort of her home, with her loving husband by her side. She was born in Ravenna on January 21, 1940 to the late William K. and Winifred Kinsey. Mary was a 1958 graduate of Stow High School and went on to earn her Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics from Kent State University.

She was a passionate lover of nature, which was reflected in her many interests, including completing the Summit Metro Parks hiking spree continuously for over 53 years, birdwatching across continents or sitting on her favorite bench in the woods with her husband of 64 years. She always found beauty in things. Being an accomplished artist, she used watercolors to bring the outdoors to life. She loved her flowers, especially orchids, transforming her house and yard into her paradise. She was a cat lover, a lifelong bridge player, enjoyed knitting, an avid reader, loved learning and solving puzzles. She had been a member of Stow City Schools PTA, Junior Mother’s Club and Garden Club. Mary made such an impact on all of our lives and will be deeply missed, never forgotten by those who knew her.

She leaves her loving husband, James, whom she married on September 9, 1961; children, Sharon (Richard) Teel, Steven (Marcie) Messerly, Mark (Hollie) Messerly and Michael Messerly; grandchildren, Tyler, Addy, Owen and Lincoln; and is survived by her sister Norma (Tom) Smith.

In honoring her wishes, Mary will be cremated and will be laid to rest at Standing Rock Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society.

Cremation services in the care of Bissler and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory, 628 W. Main St. Kent, OH 44240.
