Listen to Obituary

Sandra Kay (Cowan) Caniglia, 81, passed away peacefully at her home in Munroe Falls, OH on August 30, 2025. Born May 6, 1944 in Streetsboro, OH to Darrell and Carol (Rundquist) Cowan, Sandy grew up in Streetsboro and Ravenna. After graduating from Ravenna High School, she went on to attend The Ohio State University.

Sandy was married to the love of her life, James Caniglia. After raising their four children together in Ravenna, they moved to a wonderful home on Sandy Lake in Rootstown before eventually building their dream home on the Cowan family farm property in Streetsboro. Here, Sandy and Jim enjoyed living “life on Cowan Lake” to the fullest with family and friends.

Sandy taught pre-school, kindergarten, Sunday School, and church youth group, never shied away from a hard day’s work, and was an entrepreneur beginning early in adulthood. In 1986 she opened Sandy’s Notions Flowers and Gifts in the historic family home on Cowan Farms. She loved creating floral arrangements and décor, getting to know her brides and grooms, learning about and buying all kinds of flowers, and everyone that entered her shop. Under her leadership Sandy’s Notions flourished, and upon her retirement in 2013 she sold the business to long-time employee and friend, Amanda Yackmack.

In addition to being a long-time member of the First Congregational Church of Ravenna, Sandy was an active volunteer in her community, served on the Chamber of Commerce, and enjoyed strong friendships with her fellow Ravenna Elks Club members. Sandy would have been the first to tell you she was absolutely not a sports fan, but she was always a fan of her family and as such spent many years sitting on the bleachers or in the stands, cheering on her children, grandchildren and also husband Jim, who coached high school football and wrestling.

Sandy loved a “little glass of Coca-Cola,” entertaining friends at the lake, bonfires, vacationing, listening to the golden oldies, and dancing whenever she could. But her true passion was gardening. Sandy loved being outdoors working in the lush landscape she created that surrounded her home and tending to her vegetable garden. Throughout her life, at work and at home, flowers were a constant joy in Sandy’s life.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband James Caniglia; her sister Jane (Cowan) Rowe; and her son Jon Darrell (J.D.) Langguth. She is survived by her daughter Stacy (Brent) Hutchinson of Solomons MD; step-daughter Kristin (Teresa) Caniglia of Milford; step-son Jeffrey Caniglia of Cincinnati; daughter-in-law Stephanie (J.D.) Langguth of Rootstown; fourteen grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
