Walter S. Chung, age 84, of Kent, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 19, 2026, surrounded by his family. Walter was born on September 10, 1941, in Bangkok, Thailand.
Walter emigrated to the United States in his late teens and worked in the Akron area, most notably at BF Goodrich. He put himself through school, graduating from the University of Akron before earning his MBA from Case Western Reserve University.
Walter loved music of all kinds and was an avid audiophile. He could recount in rich detail how he procured each component of his stereo system, including the story of how he traded his Acoustic Research speakers for his beloved Altec Lansing speakers during a road trip to Chicago. He loved to sing along to many of his favorite songs and share his heritage through music. His family and friends will dearly miss hearing him sing.
In his younger years, Walter was an avid collector of stamps and coins and took great pride in his diverse collection. Later in life, he traveled extensively and found much joy in his time in Atlanta. He also enjoyed watching a wide variety of sports, including tennis, golf, and football. He enthusiastically cheered for The Ohio State University, his daughter’s alma mater, even though his other daughter attended Northwestern University. He especially cherished spending time with his two grand-puppies, Callie and Hadley, each of whom could always bring a smile to his face.
Walter will be remembered for his quiet determination, lifelong curiosity, generous spirit, and the joy he found in sharing with those he loved.
He is survived by his two daughters, Melissa Chung and Jennifer Chung (Bill Dunning) and their mother, Edie Chung. He was preceded in death by his parents and three of his siblings.
Per his wishes, cremation will take place at Bissler & Sons Crematory. The family will hold a private memorial service in his honor at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Services in care of Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory, 628 West Main Street, Kent, OH 44240.
