Alice McVetty-Vars Obituary

Alice McVetty-Vars, age 96, passed away on October 18, 2019 at Kentridge Senior Living Kent, Ohio.

She was born July 9, 1923 to the late Rose and Cecil Robbins.

During her lifetime Alice resided in Findlay, Ohio, North Tonawanda, New York, Lexington, Kentucky as well as being a longtime Kent, Ohio resident.

Alice received her B.A. from the College of Wooster. She taught in Fayette County schools where she was named Kentucky’s Teacher of the Year in 1973.

She was an avid Kent State Golden Flashes fan. Alice loved the arts and theatre. As a lifelong educator Alice had many programs at “The School House” assisted by Gordon on a wide variety of topics. Alice was also a lifelong leader in Presbyterian Women at all levels. The women of the Kent Presbyterian Church Circle she considered some her closest friends.

In her own words, “I am a lifelong learner, being insatiably curious and forever a teacher, impelled to offer to others with enthusiasm a way and the freedom to love, to explore, to find joy in learning.”

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband’s William S. McVetty of Nashville, Tennessee and Dr. Gordon F. Vars of Kent.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia McVetty; son, Chris (Dianne) McVetty; sister, Rosemary (Dave) Clark, lifelong friend, Flo Mayer of Lexington, Kentucky; 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.

Interment will be Thursday October 24, 2019 in Somerset, Ohio with the Reverends Carol McVetty and Doug Harris officiating. A Memorial Service will be scheduled at a later date as a celebration of her life.
