Laverne Smith Obituary

Laverne K. Smith. 91, of Kent, passed away peacefully at Hudson Grande Assisted Living on January 22, 2021.

She was born March 9, 1929 in Ravenna, Ohio to Michael and Veronica (Hoynos) Moscoe.  She attended Ravenna Township High School, graduating in 1947.

After graduating, she went to work at the Oak Rubber Company in Ravenna, where she eventually met her future husband, O.E. “Gene” Smith.  They were married on November 30, 1954.

When her two children were settled in school, she returned to work as a secretary at Walls Elementary School in Kent, where she enjoyed her interaction with teachers, staff and students.

She and her husband were long time members at Twin Lakes Country Club, where they enjoyed socializing and golfing with their closest friends. She was an avid fan of the Indians and Cavs, following their games on TV.  She also enjoyed attending KSU basketball games with her family.  She was a devoted animal lover and always had a cat or two around the house.  She also enjoyed birdwatching, observing them as they flocked to her birdfeeders.

She was a kind and gentile woman who was always welcoming to her children’s’ friends when they visited her home.

She is survived by her son David Smith and granddaughter, Laura Smith, both of Kent; sister, Diana Moscoe of Ravenna; and niece, Nancy Flogge of Stow.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, O.E. “Gene” Smith; daughter, Suzanne “Sue” Smith; sister, Dorothy Flogge and brother-in-law, Charles Flogge; and daughter-in-law, Ruth (Knestrict) Smith.

Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to the Portage Animal Protective League, P.O. Box 927, 8122 Infirmary Road, Ravenna, Ohio.
