Whenever my husband, Dave, and I would see Rob, he brought a smile to our faces and laughter to our day. Dave went to Europe with our son’s school and Rob was on the trip. They had so much fun together. If you wanted to win at trivia, you would want Rob on your team. We’re so fortunate to have known him. He’ll always have a place in our memories.

Rob was my chemistry teacher at Stow during my junior year. We shared a love of Motown, disco and pop music, and after graduation became friends.

Coming out was not easy in the 1980s — it was actually a bit terrifying. But Rob helped make it easier. He introduced me to his network of friends, and all of them were kind and welcoming. He was there when I needed someone to talk to. He also took me to my first gay bar.

Rob could have opened a store with his vast collection of records, videos, laser discs and DVDs. And his ability to remember song titles and the artists/groups who performed them never ceased to amaze me. I would like to think I challenged him with my 1980s music knowledge, but I’m probably kidding myself.

When I moved away from Ohio in 1999, we saw each other less. But we would get together for lunch or dinner, and Gary was always there. Rob and I talked about Gary last Christmas. He said he was a good, kind man. And that’s true. He was also quiet — a good balance to Rob, who laughed a lot, and loved having fun.

I’m glad they are together again.

Thank you, Rob, for opening my eyes to a new world I was afraid to enter. Rest in peace.
