Robert Egdell M.D. Obituary

Robert W. Egdell, M.D., 78, passed away on January 10, 2022.  He was born on December 26, 1943 to Margaret (Wray) and Norman Egdell in Mount Vernon, New York.

Dr. Egdell was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University in 1965 and Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1969.  He completed his internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Christiana Care Center in Wilmington, Delaware.  He then served in the U.S. Navy as Lieutenant Commander and Chief Medical Officer at a NATO base in Keflavik, Iceland.  He came to Kent, Ohio in 1975 where he joined a group practice, then served in solo and other group practices at Robinson Memorial Hospital, which later became part of University Hospitals.

Dr. Egdell was a devoted physician who cared deeply about his patients and their families, so much so that he lovingly recorded each birth in a handwritten journal throughout his career.  Dr. Egdell was a patient advocate who championed educating his patients with compassionate care, yet he was known as a quiet and humble man with a quick wit.  He served on many hospital committees, was chairman of his department for many years, and served on the board of Portage Medical Center Foundation of University Hospitals.

Bob adored his family.  With them he enjoyed watching the sunsets in Naples, Florida, especially with Margaritaville playing in the background.  He looked forward to his Wednesday evening dinners with Jan and close friends, he cherished his walks on the beach with Kristen, and treasured his adventures with Jeff whether that be skiing out west or sailing the Caribbean.  He enjoyed sharing book recommendations with Nicole and long chats about antiques and vintage automobiles with Matt.  A beautiful bright spot that came later in life was spending time on the golf course with his grandson, Anthony.

After retirement, Dr. Egdell rediscovered his love of bridge.  An excellent player, he achieved Life and Bronze Master status in 2021.  He was an avid supporter of the Cleveland Browns.  He became a voracious reader when his health prevented him from previous exercise activities.

Dr. Egdell was preceded in death by his parents Margaret and Norman Egdell, his in-laws, Beth and Nelson Clor and infant son, James Scott.  He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janice (Clor) Egdell, his daughter Kristen (Matt) Jacob, son Jeffrey (Nicole) Egdell and grandson, Anthony Robert Egdell.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Portage Medical Center Foundation, 6847 N. Chestnut St. P.O. Box 1204, Ravenna, OH 44266 or to Family & Community Services, Inc. 705 Oakwood St., Suite 221 Ravenna, OH 44266.
