Terrie Suzanne (Anderson) Sargi

Terrie Suzanne Sargi, age 74, of Kent, OH, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2022, at Lantern of Saybrook Assisted Living. 

Terrie was born May 19, 1948, in Youngstown, OH to the late Thomas and Marilyn (Hart) Anderson. 

After graduating from Kent State University and student teaching in Kent City School District, she started her career at Longcoy Elementary School.  Known as Mrs. Sargi to hundreds of students, Terrie started her first-year teaching 6th grade, then taught her fifth grade students until retirement in 2007.  Although she was awarded “Who’s Who in America” teacher three times in her career, named president of the teacher’s association, and received many other accolades for her work, her proudest title came from her students – “Sergeant Sargi”.   

She had a great talent for knowing how to challenge her students to achieve their personal best, and she loved seeing the students light up upon making their goals.  However, you can understand that to a 5th grade student that wasn’t fully understood or appreciated until later in life.  She knew this and remained proud of her “5th graders given title” of “Sergeant Sargi”. 

Terrie shared her talents outside of the classroom as part of her community.  She was a partner in a tutoring business called The Learning Center, where she enjoyed working with students one-on-one as well as working with her business partners, Elaine Lewis and Sue Pletzer-Wemmer.  She was an active member in her church, the United Methodist Church of Kent, where she participated in many committees over the years and volunteered her time as ushering and running the video equipment for services. 

More important to her than her career and community contributions was her family and the friends she considered family.  She is survived by her husband, Thomas Sargi; sisters, Connie Walters and Andrea Revell; daughters and sons in law, Trisha and Gary Schum, Tiffani Sargi and Nicholas Cole; grandchildren, Alexandra and Glen Schum; closest friend and caregiver to the end, Margaret Phinney.  She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Tami Sargi. 

Calling hours will be held 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory, 628 W Main St, Kent, OH 44240.  Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev Doug Denton officiating.  In lieu of flowers, her family thanks you in advance of making a memorial in her name to Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
